About the book:
Carolina Bays are elliptical freshwater depressional wetlands vary in size from a few hundred feet to several miles long, and can be found along the Atlantic seaboard, but most commonly in north and South Carolina. They are full of amphibians and reptiles, insects and birds, wildlife and plants-many of them exotic and rare.

Join Robert C. Clark and Tom Poland for an on-the –ground safari of these unique landforms in Carolina Bays. Listen to frogs croak, herons squawk, and alligators growl: watch skinks skim across the water, black-and-yellow polka-dotted caterpillars crawl on four hundred year old trees, and monarch butterflies take flight; admire delicate yellow fringed orchids, water lilies, and the perennial flowering carnivorous Venus flytrap.

Life is found in astounding abundance in Carolina Bays, yet the bays are increasingly threatened by human intervention. These diverse habitats and their unmatched biodiversity require preservation and restoration for the health of out planet.

Tom Poland graduated from the University of Georgia and is the former managing editor of South Carolina Wildlife Magazine. He is the author of South Carolina Country Roads, Reflections of South Carolina (volumes 1 and 2), and Georgialina: A Southland As We Knew It and is also a contributor to Camden’s Chronicle-Independent. Clark is a native of Charlotte, North Carolina, and his photographs have appeared in National Geographic books, Newsweek, and the Smithsonian magazine, among other publications, as well as in photographic awards annuals such as Print and Communications Arts.
