John Bartlam, Master Potter: America's First Porcelain
The Camden Archives and Museum presents an exhibit on the life and work of John Bartlam, a master potter who operated a kiln in Camden from 1772 until 1781, when the Revolutionary War interrupted life as they knew it in Camden. Bartlam's kilns, first in Cain Hoy near Charleston from 1765 to 1770 and then in Camden, produced a soft-paste porcelain that rivaled the ceramics being imported from England.
The Cain Hoy collection of John Bartlam's ceramics, on loan from The Charleston Museum, will be on exhibit from August 18, 2016 to January 31, 2017. Come see evidence of the skill and expertise of John Bartlam, the master potter from Staffordshire, England who lived and worked in Camden.
