Camden is a lovely and lively southern town with modern amenities and old world charm.

From the Mayor's Desk

Welcome to Camden, South Carolina.

Dear Friends and Visitors:
Welcome to Camden, the Steeplechase Capital of the country, the oldest inland town in the Midlands, and by all accounts the friendliest city in South Carolina.  We look forward to spending time with you.

The combination of Camden’s extraordinary beauty, warm hospitality, and friendly public spaces provide a warm welcome for residents and visitors.

In addition to our Colonial and Carolina Cups, the largest sporting events in South Carolina, we take pride in our National Steeplechase Museum, as well as the Equine Park with its hunter jumper, dressage and breed shows. Our celebrated “Historic District” boasts many of the most beautiful ante-bellum homes in the South.  We boast a superb Fine Arts Center with two theatres, an exhibition gallery, and multiple studios for dance, sculpture and painting.  We enjoy over 300 acres of city parks and playing fields.  The City and surrounding county offers extensive opportunities for hunting and fishing, as well as the world-class Hermitage Farms for clay shooting.  The Carolina Motorsports Park sits just outside the city.  Our vacation community, the 19 square mile Lake Wateree with 242 miles of shoreline, lies ten miles to the north.  The county hospital center is here, as well as multiple medical facilities and the nursing school campus of Central Carolina Tech.  For travelers, the Columbia airport is a 45 minutes drive, with the Charlotte, NC international airport a little over one hour away.

For retirees, Camden has a home for every budget.  For visitors looking for a fun time, the City helps sponsor ongoing events and activities from a Blues Festival, a Jazz Festival, a catfish festival; a Boykin Spaniel convention; a regional junior tennis tournament; and the LeMons Festival of clowns and clunky cars.  And many others.

We hope that our citizens and visitors alike will find the information on this website to be useful.  If you have any suggestions, questions or comments, please contact me at

Once again, welcome to Camden.  You’ll be glad you came!
