Baron Johann de Kalb statue to be unveiled October 10
(Camden, SC) –The public is invited to attend the Unveiling Ceremony of a statue of Baron de Kalb on October 10 at the Revolutionary War Center in Camden. The sculpture was specially commissioned by historian and best-selling author John Beakes who will be introduced at the ceremony. The statue is being donated to the City of Camden. Renowned sculptor Maria J. Kirby-Smith, whose art graces public squares and private collections across the country, created the life-size figure. She also will be present at the unveiling.
Charles Baxley, Chairman of The South Carolina American Revolution Sestercentennial Commission will preside over the ceremony.
At the conclusion of the ceremony, light refreshments will be served. Beakes will deliver a presentation on his latest book, De Kalb: One of the Revolutionary War's Bravest Generals, and a book signing will follow.
“A most generous individual, John is an extremely talented researcher and knows in detail the history of that turbulent period in the life of our America,” says Baxley.
“We are hugely honored that our local and most distinguished fine artist Maria Kirby-Smith has created this outstanding statue for placement at Camden’s Revolutionary War Center,” says Rickie Good, director of the Revolutionary War Center. “This magnificent sculpture is a testament to her unparalleled craftsmanship and to her artistic vision of this hero of the American Revolution.”
The Unveiling Ceremony begins at 2:30 p.m. on October 10 at 212 Broad Street in Camden.
Reserved and ADA parking is available at the Revolutionary War Visitor Center and other parking is available next door at Historic Camden, 222 Broad Street.
