Big Brand Retailers Marshall’s, Hobby Lobby, Petsense Coming to Camden
Newly annexed River Oaks Shopping Center to undergo $9 million redevelopment
Meyers Brothers Associates, LLC of Atlanta have purchased River Oaks Shopping Center in Camden’s growing West DeKalb/US 1/Springdale Drive retail corridor and western gateway into Downtown Camden. The 146,732 square feet River Oaks essentially went dark with the corporate closure of Kmart in 2016.
Meyers Brothers have extensive experience redeveloping former Kmart shopping centers, including Rosewood Crossing on Garners Ferry Road in Columbia.
According to City Manager Mel Pearson, local land owner Mac Willetts introduced Meyers Brothers’ VP of Development Matt Sasser to the City in fall 2017.
“Meyers Brothers were very serious about Camden,” said Pearson. “Their original thought process was new property from the ground up, and they liked the Kmart property as an option, as well, which at that time was outside of the city limits. They made the decision very quickly to come into the City and renovate River Oaks, which could have very well become a blighted property. The City worked very closely with them, utilizing certain economic incentives City Council members have put in place, which will enable Meyers Brothers to redevelop the center.”
Construction of the center will be getting underway soon. Hobby Lobby hopes to be open by second quarter 2019.
