New Splashpad at Kershaw County Aquatic Center to Open Weekends in September
Mayor Alfred Mae Drakeford and City of Camden Council as well as Chairman Julian Burns and Kershaw County Council are happy to announce the opening of the new splashpad at the Kershaw County Aquatic Center on Battleship Road.
The splashpad will be open at a reduced capacity, per COVID-19 guidelines, on Saturdays and Sundays in September. Saturday hours will be 12:00 – 6:00 pm and Sunday hours will be 2:00 – 6:00 pm. Admission to the splashpad is $3 per person age 15 and younger, $1 per person age 16 and older. Maximum capacity will be 50 people at a time.
“This is a new and exciting addition to the community facilities offered throughout the City of Camden and Kershaw County,” said Mayor Alfred Mae Drakeford. “We have long heard from our community that a splashpad would be a great addition for the families who call Camden home, and we’re happy to say that it is now a reality.”
A jointly funded project between the City of Camden and Kershaw County, the splashpad sits adjacent to the existing pool at the Aquatic Center. It includes a variety of colorful features that spray and splash water across the 3,856 square feet of the splashpad. Designed with water conservation in mind, the chlorinated recirculating system distributes 272 gallons of water per minute through the water features, which can all be activated with one touch. Walkways and a seating area surround the splashpad, which is separated from the pool by a gated fence.
“It’s a great day in Kershaw County as we unveil yet another completed community project for our citizens,” stated Kershaw County Council Chairman Julian Burns. “This shows the power of joint collaboration with the County and City. Saturday’s opening of the splashpad will bring smiles to many children’s faces for years to come.”
A formal ribbon cutting for the splashpad will be held in the spring of 2021, prior to the seasonal opening of the Aquatic Center.
The aquatics and design consultants on the project were Aquatics H2O, Palmetto Aquatic Designs, and Architects Unlimited. The splashpad contractor is PF&P Construction of Lugoff, with water features supplied by Water Odyssey. The site work was done by J.F. Contractors of Sumter.
